School Counseling and the Arts

imgres.jpgWhen I was a special educator, I enjoyed working with fellow educators who taught subjects within the areas of visual and performing arts. I would watch the way my students’ eyes would light up when they were in drama,dance, music, creative writing and art class and to me, they became different people. Some of my most difficult students soared in classes in which they were allowed to use their creativity to express themselves. As I observed this, I decided to draw more on my students’ creative strengths and I was very successful during my time in the classroom.

As a school counselor, I use a strengths-based approach in collaborating with my students to build upon their successes for future achievement and problem solving.
